【Welcome to NCKU Toastmasters Club】
Last year, I joined this club with the intention just to make friends with NCKU Taiwanese students, LOCAL students. I live in a dorm whereby most of the residents are international students, also in my department, all of the students are foreigners study chinese language.
Now, I am telling you why you should join this club. You can come and experience the demo meeting this weekend. There is no need to feel pressure to participate at your first club meeting – you can simply observe if you wish...
Let’s face it. School can be a very busy and often stressful time (especially when you spend a lot of your time writing and memorising chinese characters!)
When I join this club, it affords me interactions not only with fellow NCKU students, but also other people from different walks of life as Toastmasters is an international organisation and have branches all around the world.
I get the opportunity to voice out my ideas and present them to a variety of diverse groups, and noting how they react and respond.
In our meetings, members take turn hosting, leading and speaking: we are there for the same reason and are very supportive of each other, and it is a lot of fun to hear fantastic stories and experiences. After all, we are all in the same boat — we are learning too — so we embrace this friendly and positive environment to be able to make and learn from our mistakes!
Now, I have become pretty close to some of the people I met there, and sometimes we hang out outside of our regular meet-ups . These are fun and nice people, whom I probably never would have met, had I not put myself out there and joined the club.
As the saying goes, "All work and no play, makes Jack a dull student." Academics are crucial, but it is equally important to have a balanced life too.
And, last but not least, I think you will have fun. So get out there — take a risk, and try something new. No one ever achieved greatness without taking the first step.
If you never try, you will never know :)
